 Honoring Great Mothers Throughout History

This Mother's Day, take a moment to consider Anna Jarvis. More than a century ago, Anna was looking for a way to memorialize the great work her mother and other women like her had done to help those in need.

Her mother, Ann Maria Reeves Jarvis, was an Appalachian homemaker and social activist who organized a day to raise awareness of the poor health conditions plaguing her community. She dubbed it "Mother's Work Day," saying that the cause was best advocated by mothers. Fifteen years later, a Boston poet and author, Julia Ward Howe, organized a similar day encouraging mothers to rally for peace, saying mothers bore the loss of human life most harshly.

After Anna's mother died in 1905, she began a campaign to memorialize the life work of her mother and other great women who fought for the rights of the poor and helpless. In 1914, her dream came true when Woodrow Wilson signed a bill recognizing Mother's Day as a national holiday.

As time passed, the true meaning of Mother's Day began to get lost in the shuffle of gifts and celebratory dinners, much to Anna's dismay. Her hope was that people would remember the day's true significance: an opportunity to honor women who strive to better the world around them. This Mother's Day you can honor your mother in the true spirit of the holiday by making a donation to Free the Kids in her name. Your gift will ensure that children at Project Espwa continue to receive the food, shelter, and loving care they need to thrive.
